The Heart of Singing Steps on the Path to Becoming the Singer You Want to Be edition by Diane Haslam Arts Photography eBooks

Several weeks ago in my own voice lesson, I was having a bad case of "inner judge". This was coming from a place of trying to impress my teacher and from my own conscientious personality type that I show " improvement" each week. Consequently, on that day, and in that moment, I found a new type of neck tension creeping in, and a tight sound production as a result. That night, I pulled Diane's book out, and went to the chapter 5. Re- reading her words reminded me that this type of thinking, although well intentioned, was limiting and counterproductive to vocal freedom. So, I commanded my judge to " leave", as Diane suggests on page 88. Before my lesson the next week, I again mentally reviewed parts of this chapter, taking control of my negative thoughts and silencing the ego. Needless to say, my singing felt free and emotionally I felt free! The Heart of Singing is filled with sage advise for seasoned professionals and voice teachers, as well as all students. This book should be in everyone's music library!

The Heart of Singing Steps on the Path to Becoming the Singer You Want to Be edition by Diane Haslam Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

"The Heart of Singing," by Diane Haslam, is aptly named. It explores and celebrates the very heart and soul of singing - as well as the singer.
This is a very compelling book, filled with memories and personalized experiences, literary quotations and psychological insights. It draws the reader in from the very first pages and coaxes one along in an easy-to-read style, having more in common with a well-written novel than any "how-to" book.
In actuality, "The Heart of Singing" is not a how-to book, although it has some very practical advice tucked neatly in and around its premise. Rather, it explores the philosophy and pure joy of its subject matter - the "magic" of singing, as it says in one particularly powerful section. Instead of putting forth the theory, mechanics, and techniques of the voice, it examines such intriguing concepts as power and authenticity, responsibility, grace, trust and risk, fear and commitment, courage, generosity, growth, inspiration and balance.
As children, we understand instinctively that we must run and play with abandon - for the pure exhilaration of it. With "The Heart of Singing," Diane Haslam brings us to the conclusion that the act of singing can and must incorporate this same full-out, unabashed, joyful approach. She has built a truly unique platform based on finding and celebrating one's "authentic voice" - a "free voice" and a "true self." And she tantalizingly presents all of the reward and release that comes with it.
After reading "The Heart of Singing," I suspect you will feel absolutely convinced - regardless of your perceived talent or training - that you not only want to raise up your voice with song, but that you actually can ... and, more thrillingly, that you should.
Congratulations to Diane Haslam for a highly readable, well-structured and satisfying book.

"The Heart of Singing" was transformational for me. I read the book, applied the methods, and have experienced dramatic changes not only in my voice, but also tremendous enjoyment in singing. Dianne covers the technical aspect and vital importance of breath, but she stresses her book is not exhaustive on this subject, and directs readers where to find more information. However, most importantly, she explains the power of the singer, and the connection of breath to vitality, life and the audience. I LOVED the section on fear during performance. I have read different techniques for dealing with stage fright, but they were all centered around the idea of disconnecting from the audience. Dianne explains how to make a true connection, which actually reduces much of the fear and creates a truly moving performance for the audience AND the singer. Commitment, breath, relaxation, and effortless effort are all things we want when we sing, but these principles can be applied to many things. I discussed this book with a relative who was struggling with Natural Horsemanship. We decided "The Heart of Singing" would be extremely helpful, and she is reading it. I highly recommend this book for singers, or anyone who wants to get in touch with "flow."
I absolutely love this book. Diane, like all great teachers, has the gift of putting complex material into simple and relatable terms. This book could easily be subtitled, " The Philosophy of Singing". It gives us not just head knowledge in official academic terms, but ways to think, rethink and try!

It's an unbelievably exciting and satisfying read. I approach it like a box of fine chocolates. I savor the delicious tidbits, mull them over and put it down, to return to later.

I've sung all my life, though not professionally. I've participated in choirs for years, and with a trio. Diane's advice and observations (especially on breath),gives my voice wings. I've been to workshops and have worked with others, but they all spoke to my head. This book speaks to my heart. I highly recommend it
Filled with nuggets of practical wisdom, as well as inspiration and insight; this is a great read for anyone who sings for any reason. Suggests new thought patterns that can give you a jump-start.
What a great book. If you would like inspiration to get started singing, to continue singing, and to love singing, this is the book for you <3 It's a book I will keep close to me through my life.
This book is extremely well written. It is clear in showing the ways in which any type of singer can help him/herself to gain confidence, recognise strengths and weaknesses, and develop a positive attitude. I found the approaches related to being authentic and generous of spirit could be applied not only to singing, but to life.
